Sewage and wastewater plants in Chesapeake watershed violate permit limits

The Environmental Integrity Project (EIP) has released a report highlighting the 21 wastewater plants across the Chesapeake Bay watershed that violated their permit limits last year by releasing excessive amounts of nitrogen or phosphorus pollution, that fuel algal blooms and low-oxygen “dead zones.”

Headaches, rashes, infections, breathing problems. An increasing number of U.S. Border Patrol agents at the Imperial Beach station have reported a host of health problems since February, when an estimated 143 million gallons of Mexican sewage spilled into the Tijuana River Valley they patrol. In June, he documented more than 30 agents who had reported sewage-related illnesses. Since then, that number has nearly tripled, to at least 83 agents.
