You can now create secure continuous integration and deployment (CI/CD) pipelines that follow your organization’s best practices with a new pipeline configuration capability for serverless applications. AWS Serverless Application Model Pipelines (AWS SAM Pipelines) is a new feature of AWS SAM CLI that gives you access to benefits of CI/CD in minutes, such as accelerating deployment frequency, shortening lead time for changes, and reducing deployment errors. AWS SAM Pipelines comes with a set of default pipeline templates for popular CI/CD systems such as CloudBees CI/Jenkins, GitLab CI/CD, GitHubActions, and AWS CodeBuild/CodePipeline that follow AWS’ deployment best practices. The AWS SAM CLI is a developer tool that makes it easier to build, locally test, package, and deploy serverless applications.
Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) customers can now assign IP prefixes to their EC2 instances
Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) now allows you to assign IPv4 and IPv6 prefixes to your EC2 instances, enabling you to scale and simplify the management of your container and networking applications that require multiple IP addresses on an instance.

Bio-engineered fibre ‘stronger and tougher than some natural spider silks’
Researchers at Washington University in St Louis have engineered bacteria to make ‘polymeric amyloid’, which, spun into fibres, achieved average ultimate tensile strength of 980MPa and an average toughness of 161MJ/m3. Lead by professor Fuzhong Zhang, the team was aiming to create a protein that forms ‘β-nanocrystals’, a significant component of natural spider silk. “Spiders have …

MEMS becoming more human
The first signs are appearing that MEMS devices could emulate and sense their environment with human-like capabilities, using the five best-known senses in a “phy-gital” meta-world, forecasts Yole Developpement. The final step for MEMS would be to evolve from simple deterministic data-collection sensors to more empathic data-interpretation machines. Devices could discern and predict user moods, …

Sponsored content – Brushed DC motors have a role in automotive applications
The benefits of brushless DC (BLDC) motors are clear, and they are used in many applications within vehicles and elsewhere. However, while more powerful, lighter and more efficient they remain more expensive and require more complex control than brushed DC motors. This means that consideration must be given to which motor type is the …

Ad-dc chip drives LED lighting at 125W
Infineon is aiming at LED lighting with a family of single-stage fly-back off-line controller chips for constant voltage outputs. Called ICL88xx, up to 125W can be delivered in primary-side-regulated (right) and opto-coupler secondary-side-regulated configurations. They are optimised as secondary-side regulated constant-voltage output controllers. ICL8800 is the basic variant ICL8810 has added burst-mode operation for <100mW stand-by …
