Today we’re announcing Research and Engineering Studio (RES) on AWS 2026.03, which introduces new administrator controls, expanded filesystem support, and session management improvements.

Research and Engineering Studio on AWS (RES) is an open source, easy-to-use web-based portal for administrators to create and manage secure cloud-based research and engineering environments. Using RES, scientists and engineers can visualize data and run interactive applications without the need for cloud expertise.

RES 2026.03 gives administrators more flexibility in configuring and managing their environments. Admins can now onboard multiple individual FSx for ONTAP volumes as RES filesystems. Admins can also configure DCV token expiration time, which is useful for enabling session files with longer durations, and add up to three custom links on the RES login page for resources such as account management pages, help documentation, or usage policy pages.

Version 2026.03 also improves the experience for both admins and users around virtual desktop sessions. Admins can now restart VDIs in an error state directly from the Sessions page, helping resolve launch issues with less user intervention. Users can reset a VDI session schedule back to the system default with a single button. This version also includes assorted bug fixes and performance improvements.

Amazon CloudWatch now supports native OpenTelemetry (OTel) metrics in public preview, enabling you to send metrics directly using the OpenTelemetry Protocol (OTLP) without custom conversion logic or additional tooling. You can now combine your custom OpenTelemetry metrics with AWS vended metrics from over 70 services and query them using PromQL — no additional agents or code changes required.

With native OTel support, a team running microservices on Amazon EKS and on-premises servers can now send OTel metrics from both environments directly to CloudWatch. They can correlate application-level metrics like order processing latency from their on-premises services with EKS pod CPU utilization and Application Load Balancer request counts, then use PromQL to build unified dashboards and alarms that span their entire infrastructure. CloudWatch anomaly detection works with OTel metrics, automatically identifying unusual patterns without requiring you to set static thresholds. Query Studio, a new console experience for PromQL, lets you write queries, explore metrics, create alarms, and build dashboards directly in the CloudWatch console.

Native OpenTelemetry metrics support is available in public preview in US East (N. Virginia), US West (Oregon), Asia Pacific (Sydney), Asia Pacific (Singapore), and Europe (Ireland). There is no charge for OpenTelemetry metrics or querying during preview. To learn more, see the Amazon CloudWatch OpenTelemetry documentation .

Amazon WorkSpaces Applications now enables instances in multi-session fleets to stop accepting new user sessions, while allowing existing sessions to continue uninterrupted. This capability, known as drain mode, ensures seamless operations during maintenance, scaling, or system updates.

Multi-session fleets allow hosting multiple end user sessions on a single instance, helping to maximize usage of the underlying infrastructure – including compute, memory and storage resources – and lowering the overall cost. This new drain mode capability helps administrators manage multi-session environments more seamlessly by preventing disruption to active users. When performing system maintenance, applying security patches, or scaling down resources, administrators can configure instances to gradually empty without abruptly terminating user sessions. This ensures users can complete their work smoothly while new connections are directed to other available instances, maintaining system stability and improving the overall end-user experience.

This new feature is available at no additional cost in all AWS Regions  where Amazon WorkSpaces Applications is available.
